The 16 issues on which we rated pro teams’ public disclosure in our 2011-2012 Sports Sustainability Research are:

Facilities Management: Tracking and reducing operational impacts, including green building practices, LEED certification, and ISO 14001.

Energy: Energy sourcing, use, conservation, and renewable energy policies.

Climate Change: Emissions-related issues including GHG reduction and climate change mitigation efforts.

Water: Water scarcity, sourcing, use, conservation, and recycling.

Waste: Solid waste elimination or minimization, e-waste, and recycling.

Packaging: Efforts to minimize packaging, use biodegradable materials, and promote recycling of used packaging materials.

Transportation: Sustainable transport and distribution of products and personnel.

Marketing Communications: Environmental education, information about team initiatives, and “green” advertisements/signage in the facility.

These days, sustainability considerations are increasingly visible in our lives and businesses. But does this hold true in our national sports?

As a major sports fan, former Division 1 athlete, and sustainable business consultant, I often wonder how my favorite teams manage their environmental impacts and opportunities. So, with some support from my colleagues, I’ve scrutinized the official site of every Major League Baseball (MLB), National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), and National Basketball Association (NBA) team against a 16-point list of sustainability issues, including water conservation, energy strategy, and procurement practices.
